What is a warmline?

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) defines a warmline as a “peer-run phone line that offers callers emotional support and is staffed by volunteers who are in recovery themselves.”

A warmline may be considered an alternative to calling 911, which often results in police intervention. Police officers unfortunately are not trained or equipped to properly handle situations involving mental health crises and their presence may result in endangerment to people experiencing mental health challenges, especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, Transgender, Mentally Ill, Neurodivergent, and Disabled People.

The button above includes tons of resources including explanations about anti-carceral and abolitionist approaches to mental health as well as incredible recommendations for community connections for people with various identities and suggested reading. You can also use their website to find various providers who have been vetted by their organization.
